Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Arbitration Spring Reception Held in Hong Kong

     On 8 February 2023, South China International Arbitration Center (HK) (SCIAHK) and Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA) held the first Shenzhen-Hong Kong International Arbitration Spring Reception at the SCIAHK office on 57/F of 2ifc in Central, Hong Kong. It’s been the first time since full resumption of the normal travel between Mainland and Hong Kong. More than 50 Hong Kong legal professionals and businesspeople rewound the cooperation history of international arbitration between Shenzhen and Hong Kong over the past four decades, reviewed the development of "Twin Cities, Two Centers" and the promotion of Hong Kong + Shenzhen as a world-class arbitration hub.

     The event was hosted by Mr. Huen Wong, Executive Chairman of SCIAHK, Council Member of SCIA; Mr. Anthony Neoh, Chairman of the Board of SCIAHK, Vice Chairman of the SCIA Council; and Mr. Xiaochun Liu, Executive Chairman of SCIAHK, President of SCIA, delivered keynote speeches rewinding the cooperation history of international arbitration between Shenzhen and Hong Kong in the past 40 years, concluded the innovative development of the hybrid model of SCIAHK + SCIA as "Twin Cities, Two Centers", expressed their gratitude to the legal and business industries in HK of their contributions in developing of international arbitration.

     International arbitration is a significant part of the cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Being the first arbitration institution established in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, SCIA took the lead in hiring Hong Kong arbitrators since 80's, resolving a large amounts of cross-border commercial disputes to assist the long-term stability of the two cities’ economic and trade relations, and linkage to HK closely during the process of the development. In accordance with the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone legislation, SCIA pioneered in introducing HK professionals to be the council members, to fully demonstrate the effectiveness of the governance mechanism from the HK council members. Thus, laying the foundation for SZ and HK to create a marketization, legalization, and globalization business environment.

     In the new development stage, SCIA will actively promote the implementation of the list of the first batch of comprehensive authorized pilot reforms, advancing the international arbitration center in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area; work with the legal and business in HK to speed up of building up of SCIAHK. It also pledged to kick off a new era for the exchange and cooperation of international arbitration between Shenzhen and Hong Kong by giving full play to the edges of Shenzhen-Hong Kong “cross-border dual platforms”, and comprehensively deepening their convergence of rules, mechanism, talent exchanges and resource sharing. In the next phase, with the support from the legal and business of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, SCIAHK and SCIA will work together, deepen cooperation and promoting the "Shenzhen + Hong Kong" to become a more globally influential international dispute resolution preferably platform.
